Reports on the physiological bases of rice yield higher than 11 t/ha are rare. Six varieties (IR72, IR59682-132-1-1-2, IR64446-7-10-5, IR65598-112-2, Guichao 2 and Shanyou 63) were grown in Yunnan Province, China, on sandy loam soil using ramdomized complete block design. Total N applied was 205 kg/ha in three splits. Yield and total dry matter production was significantly different among six varieties. Guichao 2, a Chinese indica inbred, produced the highest yield of 13.6 t/ha and total dry matter production of 26.8 t/ha, while 1R72 produced 12.7 t grain/ha and 23.9 t biomass/ha. Components of yield for Guichao 2 were 65,686 spikelets/sq m, 79 percent grain-filling percentage, and 24 g 1,000-grain weight. Its maximum leaf area index was 8.0 at the flowering stage. Total N uptake was 234.5 kg/ha and physiological nitrogen use efficiency was 58 kg grain/kg N. The harvest index (HI) of different varieties (range of 0.44-0.49) were not significantly different. It was concluded that further increases in rice yield potential could be achieved by increasing biomass production, while HI is not likely to be increased
