Comparative study of the potassium content of the ash of the peelings of five varieties of Banana (Musa sapientum)
1995
Albelda, J.C.
This study was undertaken to compare the potassium content present in the peelings of five varieties of banana namely: Bungulan (Musa sapientum var Suaveolens); Lacatan (Musa sapientum var Lacatan); Latundan (Musa sapientum var Cinerea); Morado (Musa sapientum Linn var Ternatenesis, and Saba (Musa sapientum var compressa). Percentage of ash content was calculated and it was found out that Saba has the highest yield of ash and Latundan gave the lowest yield of ash among the five varieties of banana peelings. Qualitative analysis was done confirming the presence of other inorganic salts on the ash of the five varieties. Salts present were chloride, phosphate and sulfate. Flame photometry was employed for potassium analysis. The computed result showed that Bungulan has the highest percentage yield of potassium, second was Lacatan, third was Morado, then latundan and Saba which has the lowest percentage yield of potassium. It can be concluded that Bungulan having the highest percentage yield of potassium can now be utilized as raw material in preparing medicinal product for use as a diuretic
