Assessment of utility, production and physical characteristics of Rusa deer (Cervus timorensis, Muller and Schlegel) in sub-districts of Merauke and Okaba, Irian Jaya, Indonesia

The highest deer exploitation was from Okaba hunting area with the average of 26.3 deer (46.99 percent) followed by Wendu/Kumbi with 20.9 deer (37.33 percent) and Wasur 58.8 deer (15.71 percent) per month. Hunting between dry and wet seasons did not differ significantly in the three hunting areas, but in Wasur more deer were killed during the dry season (P0.05). More male were exploited than female in Okaba and Wendu/Kumber than Wasur. More species of forage were offered to the deer in Okaba than Merauke. The percentage of crude fat and phosphorus of green feeds in Merauke was higher (P0.05) than in Okaba. The average daily gains in Merauke wre 61.20 g and in Okaba 67.78 g; there was no significant difference (P0.05) between these values. For improvement in body length, the values were 8.6 cm and 9.5 cm; and for heart girth, 12.4 cm and 13.5 cm, for Merauke and Okaba, respectively. There were no significant differences in the components of blood serum between the two areas. The values for Merauke and Okaba, respectively were: for protein, 6.96 and 6.73 mg/100 ml; for urea, 40.5 and 42.8 mg/100 ml; for initial level of calcium, 6.47 and 7.39 ml/100 ml; for final blood serum calcium, 6.31 and 6.38 mg/100 ml; for mean blood serum phosphorus, 8.29 and 8.14 mg/100 ml. Based on the fecal analysis for the eggs there were six species of eggs nematodes found in rusa deer in subdistricts of Merauke and Okaba. The nematodes were: Moniezia expansa, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Avitellina centripunctata, Toxocara vitolorum, Strongyloides papillosus and Gongylonema pulchrum. Eggs per gram (EPG) of the six species had no significant difference (P0.05) between subdistrict of Merauke and Okaba
