Combining ability analysis was performed in a 6 x 6 diallel (excluding reciprocals) in the F1 generation to study adult plant yellow and leaf rust resistance in six wheat varieties viz., Part 73, Pothwar, Arz, Indus 79, CMH 73A, and Bobwhite. Considerable genetic variation was present among six varieties and 15 crosses for both traits. The variances due to general and specific combining ability were almost equal for yellow rust while specific combining ability variance was three times higher than general combining ability variance for leaf rust. Bobwhite, Arz, Indus 79 and CMH 73A appeared to be good general combiners for yellow rust resistance. For leaf rust resistance, resistant genes were accumulated in Bobwhite, Arz, CMH 73A and Pothwar. Bases on varietal general combining ability effects and mean coefficient of infection of 15 crosses to both rusts, three crosses viz., Arz x Bobwhite, Arz x CMH 73A, and CMH 73A x Bobwhite are recommended for further breeding.
