A seed rate experiment on wheat was conducted at Malakandher Farm of the NWFP Agriculture University, Peshawar, during winter season of 1990-91. Wheat variety Pirsabak-85 was planted at the rates of 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 kg/ha. Seed rate significantly affected most of the characters. The number of spikes increased from 214 to 371 and the number of grains per spike decreased from 59 to 43 respectively as the seed rate increased from 40 to 120 kg/ha. Harvest index decreased from 42.96% to 35.12% and 1000 grains weight decreased from 40.47 g. to 39.69 g. with increase in seed rate from 40 to 120 kg/ha. The highest grain yield of 3563 kg/ha and straw yield of 6597 kg/ha were obtained from plots seeded at the rate of 120 kg/ha.
