Ribosomal RNA gene copy number was investigated in Lathyrus species. Species showed large variation in genome size and in the number of secondary constrictions present on chromosome complements. The method of quantitative dot blot hybridization using 32P labelled rRNA gene probes was used for saturation hybridization. Using the amount of rDNA in each genome and their relative lengths the reiteration frequency of rRNA gene was determined. The species showed large variation in the number of gene copies. This variation was similar when either of the homologous or heterologous probes were used. The increase in rRNA gene copies was found to be proportional to the genome size.
