Pure Holstein Friesian (n= 166) and crossbred (Sahiwal x Holstein Friesian) cattle (n=131) maintained at the two livestock farms, Cattle Breeding and Dairy Farm Harichand and Livestock Research and Development Farm Surezai, respectively were tested for the estimation of serum bilirubin (total) during winter and summer 1988-89. The animals were grouped as Young (group-l), dry (group-ll) and lactating (group-lll). The biochemical assay kit (E. Merk. Darmstadt, Germany) used basically for human liver function test, was used in this study. The serum bilirubin (total) across all the animals of both the farms ranged from 0.36 to 0.63 mg/dl and the average value was 0.51 mg/dl. only 10 cows in group-lll at the Harichand Farm showed abnormally high values for serum bilirubin (total). These values were not considered while calculating the average value for healthy cattle and were recorded separately. The overall average value of serum bilirubin total (0.51 mg/dl) determined in the present study may be used as the base line value for both the pure Holstein Friesian and crossbred cattle under the local conditions in N.W.F.P.
