A model of use of remittances for agriculture: A case study of a village in the North West Frontier Province [NWFP] of Pakistan

The main purpose of this paper was to present a model of use of remittances for agriculture by focusing upon the extended family and its dimensions: support for family, support from family, Authority pattern, family size, and familism. A series of possible confounding and intervening variables are used in the model. The results reveal that only two extended family dimensions including support for family, and authority pattern are important explaining the use of remittances for agriculture. It is found that these variables have positive effects on the use of remittances for agriculture. In addition, findings of this paper shows that the age of males and their education, land holdings and household head's attitude toward business are important confounding factors in the model. Results reveal that age of males in a household, household land holdings and a household positive attitude toward business positively affect the use of remittances for agriculture. However, education of males in a household negatively affect the use of remittances for agriculture. Since this study is exploratory and based upon case study, future research is suggested to explore further the effects of the variables used in the full model on the use of remittances for agriculture.
