Fate of fertilizer nitrogen applied to soil and its effect on maize (Zea mays L.)

A field experiment was carried out on maize to compare the efficiency of urea, ammonium sulfate, and ammonium nitrate, and to assess the fate of applied N in soil-plant system. The experiment was conducted on a silty clay loam soil with alkaline pH. The three N fertilizers each at 150 kg N/ha were applied half at sowing and half at six-leaf stage. Basal dose of 90 kg P2O5/ha as single super phosphate and 60 kg K2O/ha as potassium sulfate were also applied at sowing time. Soil samples at 0-20 and 20-40 cm were taken from each treatment at different stages of plant growth and analyzed for total mineral N, NH4-N, and NO3-N. All the three fertilizers significantly increased the grain and stover yields, and 1000 grain weight as compared with the control treatment. However, the differences among N fertilizer treatments were not significant. Recovery of fertilizer N in plant tops varied from 52-57% for various sources of N. About 56-63% of the applied N was accounted for N in soil and plant at the end of the experiment for the three sources of N. There were little differences in the NO3-N between the soils at 0-20 cm and 20-40 cm during different stages of plant growth. The results showed that large part of the applied N from any if the three sources did not stay in soil in the plant available form for longer period of time.
