1992
Khanzada, A.G. (Agricultural Research Inst., Tandojam (Pakistan))
Sugarcane top borer, Scirpophaga excerptalis Wlk. and S. nivella F. is a serious pest and cause enormous loss to the sugarcane crop. Due to its subterranean feeding habit, control measures against this pest are difficult. At present no sugarcane variety is recorded immune to this insect. The literature assessment and opinion of different scientists on various aspects of pest viz; host plant, losses, ecology, biology, varietal behaviour, IPM approaches and control strategies with use of selective insecticides in different ecological zones are mentioned here for conducting the research in an optimum way. A limited fauna of parasitoids is available in Pakistan which may be helpful to develop the feasible and long term strategies to minimize the pest threat.
