Heterobeltiosis in radish, Raphanus sativus

A field experiment on radish (Raphanus sativus) with seven parents and their 21 F1s (without reciprocals) was conducted during winter 1992-93 at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture, Salna, Gazipur, Bangladesh. The objective of the experiment was to estimate the nature and extent of heterobeltiosis in F1 hybrids. The heterobeltiosis over better parent was estimated in 21 F1s of radish for nine characters including root weight per plant. Eighteen crosses showed significant heterotic performance for earliness than the better parent. The range of heterobeltiosis was 0.46 to 71.60 percent for root length, 1.75 to 38.05 percent for root diameter, 0.59 to 106.29 percent for root volume, 37.57 to 165.76 percent for root weight, 30.00 to 146.87 percent for plant weight, 0.21 to 48.71 for number of leaves per plant, 0.32 to 39.73 for leaf length and 12.27 to 56.42 percent for leaf breadth. All crosses yielded significantly higher root and plant weight over the better parent. Considering performance and extent of heterosis, the cross Kuni x Tasaki ranked first.
