Process conditions on solid state fermentation which include moisture content, initial pH and composition of fermentation medium were evaluated to improve the nutritive value of sugarcane bagasse. Highest bioconversion activity of Trichoderma harzianum on sugarcane bagasse was observed at 50 percent moisture level and an initial pH of 2.0. Using medium 2 after 7-day fermentation, highest bioconversion of 17.43 percent was observed with a total protein of 19.94 percent. Lentinus sajor-caju, a white-rot fungus, was used to evaluate its ability to degrade the lignin present in the sugarcane bagasse. Delignification of sugarcane bagasse proved to be ideal at pH 8.0 and using medium 3. Other results indicated that chemical and physical pretreatments of sugarcane bagasse followed by biological treatment with L. sajor-caju can reduce lignin content to 80 percent and 48 percent, respectively, using medium 3
