DNA sequences variation between typical indica and japonica varieties which have been determined by phenotypic and isozyme analysis were surveyed by PCR analysis. A total of 80 pairs of STS primers (from cDNA and genomic clones) were tested among 65 varieties (33 indica and 32 japonica varieties). Sixteen of these primers give out the polymorphism bans. Nine of them give a good classification between indica and japonica varieties. These 9 primers will be further tested and used for the classification of more cultivated rices
