Ethylene production, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) content and the ACC-conversion capability in strawberry fruits in consecutive stages of their growth and ripening

Strawberry fruits produced a negligible amount of ethylene during their growth and maturation, which was associated with a low level of ACC, the immediate ethylene precursor. Although the rate of ethylene synthesis was really low, the fruits capacity for ACC conversion (ACC oxidase activity) was quite high at all stages of their development. It was also observed that in the quite young (10 days after anthesis), green strawberry fruit the rate of ethylene production, the ACC level and the ACC conversion capacity were the highest and declined significantly thereafter. These results suggest that ethylene does not seem to be a regulatory factor in strawberry fruit ripening but perhaps it may play some role in the regulation of the expansion growth of the receptacle cells
