Genetically marked queens (A. mellifera carnica, colour cordovan, cd/cd) were bred in different sizes by grafting larvae at ages between 1 and 3 days. They could mate naturally at an isolated drone congregation area where 2 genetically different groups of drones were present. Only one successful mating flight (queen returned with mating sign) was allowed. The progeny and the number of spermatozoa in the spermatheca were determined. There was no relation between the percentage in the progeny of big cd drones in regard to the queen size. The number of spermatozoa in the spermatheca after one successful mating flight ranged between 0.6 and 6 million but was not related to the queen size
