China is famous for its many mountains which occupy more than two-thirds of its total land area. The hilly region represents 60% of rural population, 55.6% of farm land, and 66.7% of total grassland. Economy in the region is poor and people live in poverty. Improving the economy in these areas poses a great challenge. The crop-animal system in the hilly regions is a comprehensive system of agricultural production with multiple layers, structures, and functions. Practiced for so many years, it has demonstrated the importance of developing crop-animal systems. Through the application of ecological principles and by means of field surveys, various types of Chinese hilly agriculture have been documented to further develop China's crop-animal systems. Research must concentrate on the assessment of indices and methods of crop-animal systems and on the systematic study of various categories and modes of crop-animal integration
