Mineralogical composition of the clay fraction in 196 samples of solonchakous and deeply solonchakous vertic soils is dominated by the smectitic phase (20-50 %); there are also dioctahedric hydromica (11-50 %), kaolinite (12-25 %), chlorite (10-22 %), fine disperse quartz. The smectitic phase is composed mainly by intricate non-arranged mixed-lattice formations of various types, mica-smectites with high content of individual smectite blocks prevailing, as well as individual smectite in lower horizons. The insight into the smectitic blocks composition has been done based on K-and Li-tests
