Introduction of new methods in hop breeding looking for accessions resistant to downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora humuli Miyabe et Takah) and aphids (Phorodon humuli Schrank)

In a large group (app. 200) of hop accessions susceptibility for downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora humuli Miyabe et Takah) and aphids (Phorodon humuli Schrank) has been estimated, additionally their essential oil has been analysed by gas chromatography. Results have been processed to find biochemical markers which would be of use in the hop breeding process. In the group which was the least susceptible for aphids (only 10 accessions in the group studied) the content of the component 23 in the essential oil was extremely low, while that of the component 92 was extremely high. The group which was most resistant to downy mildew (only 5 accessions in the group studied) extremely low contents the components 23 and 28 were determined. The results show that in spite of the fact that some correlations between the contents of some essential oil components and downy mildew and/or aphid susceptibility are strongly indicated these biochemical markers are not connected with the resistance mechanism in question.
