Cepon, M. | Kovac, M. (Ljubljana Univ. (Slovenia). Biotechnical Fac., Zootechnical Dept.)
Genetic changes for carcass traits of Brown bulls in Slovenia were estimated over a seven-year period. An animal model was used beside REML procedure (PEST) and Powell algorithm (PERUN) to solve the system of equations and estimate covariances. Genetic changes of Brown bulls show that visual appraisals of carcasses on slaughter line tend to worsen. The tendency towards worse dressing percentage and conformation index was evaluated as well. When the percentage of genotype of Brown Swiss is increased the genetic changes show that proportion of lean meat decreases and percentages of tallow, kidney tallow and bones increase. Estimations of genetic changes show that proportion of front quarter decreases and pistol increases. The decrease of lean meat per live weight before slaughter is also estimated.
