Morphological development and crude protein and detergent fibres contents in different red clover cultivars during primary growth

Anatomical and morphological plant factors in major part account for herbage nutritive value. To be of practical value relationships among these characteristics should be extensively studied. The objective of this experiment was to establish relationships between phenological phase on weight basis (MSW(ow)), leafiness - leaflets/(petioles + stems + reproductive fractions), contents of crude protein (CP), neutral- and acid-detergent fibre (NDF, ADF) in eight red clover cultivars during primary growth in the Prealpine region of Slovenia. A field trial using a split-plot design with 4 replications was set up in May 1994 on the Experimental field of Biotechnical Faculty in Ljubljana. Included cultivars Barfiola 4n, Perenta 4n, Poljanka 2n, RBF 2n, Renova 2n, Temara 4n, Vanessa 4n and Ziva 2n were sown as main plots while herbage samplings were taken as subplots. The sampling began on 4 May 1995, and continued every 10-days thereafter. Differences between morphological development and nutritive value are relatively small within cultivars although some are significant. With main exceptions of Perenta and Ziva in MSW(ow) and Poljanka in both NDF and ADF contents all other distributions are consistent within cultivars. By growth progress MSW(ow) and NDF content increased, and CP content decreased significantly. Leafiness decreased only during the first four samplings and remained similar thereafter. A reason for this, as well as for them reduction in increasing of ADF content from the fourth to the fifth sampling, was in higher red clover regeneration during the same period. Regressions between the studied parameters have high coefficients of determination (R2) ranging from 0.70 to 0.93. Dry matter content was lower at the second and the third sampling compared to the first one. After the third sampling DM content started to increase with growth progressing.
