Agronomy curricula in the past and present in Slovenia and abroad

A comparison of curricula of 15 (out of 100) selected faculties majoring agronomy on the basis of surveys in 1964 and 1996 discovered trends towards graduated studies and changes from technologies to management and scientific research. Compound courses are splited to more and more smaller selectives, laboratory and field work does not match hours credited for classes. Premajoring courses and core courses loose hours in favour of more and more supporting majors and interdisciplinary combinations. Agronomy courses in Ljubljana match the content and volume of courses at faculties of similar size and geographic latiitude (A)., with three courses more at Zagreb, in Vienna the program even more condensed. In Italy minimum time devoted to core courses is settled by the law of 1994 for all 20 faculties in accordance with recommendation of EU. Hungarian faculties (Kesthely etc) are also adjusting their courses to these standards, different from the practice in the USA, where students may major in an infinite number of combinations of courses as long as they fulfill the requirement of prerequisites and total sum of credit hours. This trend is evident also at some faculties in Europe (Hohenheim etc.). According to the suggestion of FAO experts visiting Slovenia 1995 curriculum problems should be at least once a year subject of a national seminar. The present contribution offers suggestions which data are important for such a meeting. Unfortunately many answers to our circular letter 1996 are still missing, so the final analysis will be published in due time.
