From 1991-1992, in a semi-arid maize-growing region (Trnava, Slovak Republic), the effect of stand density (patterns 700x300, 700x200 and 700x150 mm), nitrogen doses (0-120-240 kg of pure nutrients per hectare) and irrigation on chosen parameters of vegetative growth of the model hybrid TA-TO 260 S were observed. The aim was to analyze the effect of these treatments on the chosen indicators and to find possibilities of influencing the vegetative growth parameters of the new hybrid. In relation to stand density, nitrogen doses and irrigation, the following order of stability of the chosen parameters resulted: total number of leaves more than total plant height more than plant height to tassel base more than stem thickness on the apex more than number of living leaves more than number of dead leaves more than plant leaf area more than stem thickness on the base more than stem volume more than leaf area index. From the agrotechnical treatments, stand density was the strongest factor. Higher doses of nitrogen and irrigation influenced "stay-green" (positive effect on the number of living leaves and on size of leaf area). It was confirmed that by irrigation in the generative stage of ontogeny it is impossible significantly to influence the biometric parameters of the stand, not even the total leaf area. The effect of nitrogen on the observed parameters in relation to the applied doses was minimal
