The nutritive value of two certificated pea cultivars (Romeo and Olivin) were evaluated by chemical and biological methods. The influence of year and experimental period on crude protein digestibility, biological value of proteins (BVP), and protein efficiency ratio (PER) were studied. There were no marked differences between years and cultivars in basic nutrient content. Significant differences (P less than 0.05) were noted only in PER. Larger variability was observed for the cultivar Romeo in crude protein balance between the experimental periods. Comparison of both varieties showed a significantly higher amount of retained crude protein in animal organism (P less than 0.05) in the Olivin group, and a significantly lower feed consumption per 1 g gain (P less than 0.05) at the same time. The differences in crude protein digestibility were not significant. The tested cultivars are marked by balanced content of crude protein, and/or proteins during the years studied. The digestibility of crude protein and BVP, determined with rats, was high.
