The work was oriented towards production of manure fertilizer from mixes of slurry and straw. The aims were to evaluate manure quality, to determine losses in dry and organic matter and in nutrients during ripening, and to find the optimum straw and slurry ratio for mixing. Straw with 80 % dry matter content was able to absorb six times its own mass of slurry. That means for six parts of slurry with 6 % dry matter one part of straw may be used. If the substrate-produced manure after mixing has a dry matter content lower than 14 %, the straw is not able to absorb all the slurry. Based on the results, a formula for calculation of sorbent quantity was deduced. On the basis of the laboratory results, the cattle slurry was then mixed with wheat straw in an absorbing and mixing tank. The manure substrate had a dry matter content of 13 %. After the substrate ripened, the manure was of satisfactory quality. The loss of mass was 74 %, but 45 % of the loss was of the liquid which flowed from the manure during ripening. Three methods of mixing the straw and slurry are suggested: mixing in an absorbing and mixing tank, in a mixing drum or twin-screw conveyer, and on an isolated concrete pad
