Genetic diversity as indicator of biological and ecological stress of maize

The importance of determining genetic diversity of maize hybrids in analysis of grain yield is described. For the purposes of expression of both biological and ecological stress, related hybrids were mutually bred and tested together with their parental heterotic hybrids, and with selfed hybrids of the F2 generation in addition. The testing was carried out in 1990-1992 on a locality near Trnava (Slovak Republic), in a maize-growing region without irrigation. Genetic diversity (GD) was calculated acording to Troyer as a coefficient. Simultaneously, combining diversity (CD), which is suitable only for orientation analyses of the prediction type, was calculated and compared without including inbred genotypes. In 1990, which was marked by drought, ecological stress was determined with the help of both GD and CD coefficients, accentuated by related hybrid combinations. The importance of such analyses increases in view of the narrowing genetic basis for maize breeding and of the tendency to conceal information about hybrid origin, which is the subject of company secrecy
