Creation of homozygote maize genotypes
1996
Izakovic, R. (Zeainvent a.s., Trnava (Slovakia))
From 1990-1994, 760 new starting resources were included in the creation of homozygote materials. Synthetic and regional populations and their crosses with lines, various types of hybrids of both known and unknown composition and intergeneric crosses of maize (Zea mays L.) with teosinte (Euchlaena maxacana Schrad.) were used as genetic resources. In the evaluated period, 688 homozygote materials were bred in the S-7 generation. Based upon line evaluation on combining ability and valuable characteristics, the most suitable resources for the creation of homozygote materials appeared to be the crosses of the (AxB)xA type, hybrids of unknown composition and single hybrids of known origin. However, mutual crosses of different early lines have priority among them. In the latter two years, single hybrids of known origin dominated with 80 % among the resources. The effectivity of the creation of homozygote materials is most markedly documented by their share in potential hybrids. While in 1990, in six hybrids registered in the state varietal trials, six domestic lines were used, in 1994 19 lines of domestic breeding were used in the composition of 21 registered hybrids, where six of them could be found in 2-5 hybrids
