The influence of soil moisture on PCB degradation by activated soil microflora was investigated in a loamy soil (Gabcikovo), which was intentionally contaminated by a PCB mixture (Delor 103 and Delor 106, 2:1 w/w, decachlorobiphenyl 2 % w/w) and with a water content of 20, 30 and 40 %. Results demonstrate that soil moisture is an important factor in PCB degradation. Variations in the water content result in aerobic (water content less than 30 %) or anaerobic (water content more than 30 %) conditions which determine the course of degradation of individual PCB congeners. Aerobic conditions promote the cleavage of less chlorinated congeners, while under anaerobic conditions loss of higher chlorinated congeners is encountered.
