Influence of the commercial preservative SILOSOL which operates on the basis of formate, was evaluated under laboratory conditions. Its efficiency was studied after its application into silaged, slightly wilted alfalfa (23.75 % dry matter). SILOSOL was used in doses of 0.3 % and 0.4 % of the weight of preserved feed. Untreated silages were used as negative control and silages with 0.5 % formic acid were the positive control. Three silages were prepared in each group. More intensive creation of lactic acid as well as of volatile fatty acids (Table 1) took place in silages treated with SILOSOL compared with the negative control. pH value and ammoniacal nitrogen content in silages treated with SILOSOL remained at levels given for untreated silages. The silages with formic acid were of significantly better quality than silages with SILOSOL. There were no significant differences between silages treated with 0.3 % and 0.4 % doses of SILOSOL. The addition of SILOSOL did not influence markedly the microflora composition in alfalfa silages (Table I). Losses of substance in silages treated with SILOSOL were approximately the same or higher than in untreated silages. The lowest losses of substance were observed in silages with formic acid. The addition of SILOSOL in doses of 0.3 % and 0.4 % into silaged, slightly wilted alfalfa did not influence significantly the fermentation process and quality of alfalfa silages compared with untreated silages. The quality of silages with 0.5 % formic acid was markedly better than the quality of silages with SILOSOL.
