1994
Rees, D.J. | Lambers, D.H.R. | Baidjoe, B. | Dipoikromo, S. | van der Eb, J.W.
In this bulletin an overview is given of the soil composition in relation to rice crop yields, climate and rainfall in relation to the cropping intensity, production costs and production practices such as sowing and flooding methodes, different rice varieties being used, seed production and weed and pest control. In conclusion it can be stated that the rice production is currently profitable for Suriname as a whole. However the lack of current investment in the infra-structure and the lack of attention for the rice quality may put this current profitability at risk in the future. There is considerable scope for improvement of production practices, in terms of integrated management of pests, weeds and soil fertility, reduced use of pesticides and the use of higher yielding varieties that could reduce costs and increase yields and profitability for the farmer
