Current information on bovine embryo transfer in Thailand

Two approaches have been simultaneously undertaken: a). to import frozen embryos of superior exotic breeds and transfer to local cows, and b). to develop conventional technique and collect embryos locally. The success has been reported in 1986 from the nonsurgical transferring of frozen embryos to the local cows. Additionally in the same year, there was also a report of the success of local flushing and transferring. Up to the present time, we have flushed over a hundred donors with the rate of embryo recovery 0-16 embryos per flush utilizing phosphate buffer media at pH 7.2. Most of our donors were the 62.7-75.0 % crossbred cows. We found that less than 40 % of embryos from these cows were in good quality and "usable". Pure breed holsteins were also utilized as donors. Embryos from the latter were more reliable. The pregnancy rate was 35-40 %. Twenty-two calves were born from embryo transferring-fifteen calves from the frozen embryos, and seven calves from local flushings. The technigue has also been extended to beef cattle. Preliminary result indicated that hormonal profile in dairy cattle can also be used in beef cattle. Pregnancies was reported and no calve was born yet. Improving reproductive efficiency by embryo transfer, coupled with the nutritional and management factors will account for maximum milk yielded and economic benefit in the tropical countries.
