New biotechnologies in cattle reproduction

Thibier, M. (Union Nationale des Cooperatives d'Elevage et D' Insemination Artificielle, Maisons Alfort (France))
Embryo transfer is no more a real new technology as more than several thousands of embryos are transferred every year around the globe. It is nowadays applicable anywhere in the world and may enhance dramatically the world exchange of genetic material due to its high degree of health security. Gaution should be taken though to use it in economically justified situations. The three new technologies that will gradually come in the field operations in the decade to come is: first Embryo sexing, second In Vitro Fertilization and third Cloning. The main technical characteristics of these three techniques will be presented and discussed. The former will be of some implementation in the farms in the coming months. The second is still accompanied by mediocre rates of success incompatible with any economical extension at this stage. In particular cases, it may be already developed, such as in one situation in France. The third is even less efficient and has been still so far more of a medium, group communication and ad tool than anything else but there is no doubt that this will change by the mid-nineties. Their real impact on the Cattle industry and particularly on the breeding programmes is still very much a matter of speculation.
