Clinicopathological study of porcine aflatoxicosis: A case report

Acute aflatoxicosis had occurred in a large farrow-to-finish pig farm (950 sow unit) in central Thailand resulting in high morbidity and high mortality among the weaners and the finishers. It was proved to be associated with aflatoxin contamination of corn being mixed in the ration. Clinical signs included inappetence, decreased growth rate, weakness, ataxia and jaundice. The postmortem lesions were anemia, either very yellow or pale liver, and accumulation of serous fluid in the body cavities. Histopathologically, there were diffuse hepatic cell degeneration and necrosis supported by an increase in serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase. As much as 800 and 607.5 ppb of aflatoxin B1 were detected in the rations and the contaminated corn respectively.
