Primary objectives of the study are to find out the efficiency of threshers operating on rice and coarse grains, the cost structure and return to investment and the break-even point. Other objective is to derive a farm decision alternative of an efficient and appropriate grain thresher. The research has been a plan in the farm machinery project under the the VI national economic and social development plan in cooperation with a number of concerned government departments aiming to undertake research, development and promotion activities for this type of farm machinery. This particular research programme was conducted on the threshers of different capacity which are workable when attached to the power take-off of a tractor. The data collection was available through sampling survey and interview of the owner-farmer of the threshing machines. Attaching to the same size of the power-take off, the research found that, a thresher having longer threshing drums normally exhibit more threshing efficiency although the unit is more expensive. That is a thresher of 6 feet size can mechanically thresh 2,610, 849.6 and 496.8 kilograms per hour of paddy, soybean and cowpea respectively while a bigger thresher of 8 feet size in an hour can work out 5,500 1,872 and 1,260 kilograms of the respective harvests. Ability to get an adequate custom threshing heavily determines choice for the utilization. For the 6 feet size thresher, a break-even of the cost and return can be expected at 296.48 hours of work a year. At the 300 hours per year for six years of the custom work, the financial analysis of benefit-cost ratio of 1.2124, the net present value of 58,854 baht and the internal rate of return of more than 50 percent are viably attainable.
