The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the effect of the "Magnohrom" industry (of fireproof materials) in Kraljevo (Serbia, Yugoslavia) on the quality of nearby soils, plants (maize), and river water. In the collected soil and plant samples, the content of Cr, Zn, Pb, Ca and Mg was determined by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Samples of river water were analyzed for content of the most important cations and anions, as well as for the aforementioned heavy metals. Results indicate that samples of soil and maize plants, at a distance of 500 and 1000 m from the factory, have increased content of the investigated heavy metals. Concentrations of Pb and Cr in the investigated water samples surpass maximum permissible values for waters of quality class 1st and 2nd.
