On some problems with the point estimators

In this paper we give some comments about the maximum likelihood method and the estimation of the parameters, namely mathematical expectation and variance. Are the sample mean and the sample variance the best estimators of unknown mathematical expectation and variance? Does the maximum likelihood method have "good" properties only, or maybe, does it lead us to unexpected results? In this paper we give some answers to the previous questions for some distributions which may occur in hydrology and meteorology.
