Induction and micropropagation of sugar beet haploids (Beta vulgaris L.)

The aim of research was to obtain the sugar beet haplolids directly, via gynogenesis, their micropropagation and callusogenesis, and regeneration of haploid plants from haploid calli. Fourteen diploid, monogerm, fertile sugar beet genotypes were used as donors of explants. On the tested nutrient media, genotypes exhibited different gynogenic potential. During the micropropagation and callusogenesis, genotypes significantly differed in number of plants and calli production. On two nutrient media, plantlets regenerated from the calli via organogenesis. Anatomical and histological analysis of organogenic and non-organogenic calli was also done. There was no change of chromosome number (haploid) in organogenic calli and regenerated plantlets, while tissue of non-organogenic calli contained cells with diploid chromosome number. Isozyme analysis detected occurrence of new genetical, or epygenetical, variability.
