Effect of nitrogen on the stages of development, growth and yield of sesame was studied. Eight distinct growth stages viz., seedling emergence, leaf development, formation of side shoot/stem elongation, inflorescence emergence, flowering, development of fruit, ripening and senescence were identified. Sesame took 82 days to mature after emergence. Dry matter (DM) accumulation increased with the age of plant at all nitrogen levels. Rate of DM increase was maximum during 50-70 days of growth period. Maximum crop growth rate (CGR), leaf area index (LAI) and net assimilation rate (NAR) were recorded at higher nitrogen levels. Relative growth rate (RGR) did not vary appreciably for nitrogen levels but decreased with the age of plant. Dry matter, LAI, CGR, RGR and NAR were significantly correlated with the seed yield. Highest seed yield was obtained from 60 kg N/ha application.
