Culex pipiens (like other mosquitoes) vitellogenesis follows after a blood meal. During the first day after the blood meal, the primary follicle grows and the follicular cells differentiate and show a great activity. The cytoplasm is rich with ribosomes and mitochondria. The follicular cells are involved in vitellogenin protein synthesis, and synthesis and deposition of vitelline membrane and chorion. The proteins are transported to the oocyte by pinocytosis via the microvilli. Ultrastructural observations of irradiated ovarioles demonstrate the following effects: disorganisation, vacuolization, degeneration of the oocyte contents, distorted follicular epithelium cells (e.g. irregular or absence of microvilli, inhibiting secretion of their products)
