The PEGASE model has been developed as a tool for surface water management. It provides a deterministic and predictive assessment of the water quality as a function of pollutants loads, under various hydrological conditions. PEGASE is an integrated basin / river model. PEGASE is able to handle a few hundred of rivers simultaneously and the area of hydrological basins can rise up to a few ten thousands square kilometres. PEGASE includes a hydrological and hydrodynamic sub-model, a thermal sub-model and a sub-model of the water quality and of the aquatic ecosystem. PEGASE offers a structured approach and inventory of domestic loads, industrial loads, role of purification plants, diffuse loads by the soils and direct loads from rearing. PEGASE calculates explicitly the mechanisms of self-purification in the rivers and calculates the evolution of eutrophication. PEGASE enables the comparison of scenarios in order to design optimal policies. PEGASE can be used through a graphic user-friendly interface. Input data and computed results are processed and visualized by a Geographical Information System (GIS)
