Since several centuries, the sovereigns who reigned on the present Belgium territory, employed men who were specialized in horses' medicine. From 1831 till 1980, the kings from the dynasty of the princes of Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha employed official veterinarians. In the second part of the 19th century, under the reign of Leopold II, the veterinary service of the Kings' House has been the Most developped. Later on, this function lost a lot of its importance. When the horses were not used anymore for the sovereigns travelings, the official function of veterinarian of the Kings' House has been suppressed
