The accuracy of the numerical models computing settlements and subsidences induced by groundwater withdrawals, is largely and basically dependent of the assumptions chosen in the conceptualization of the simulated processes. The analytical methods are now totally obsolete except for validation (on very simplified situations) of numerical models. Indeed, they are rarely applicable on real situations without very simplifying assumptions. The numerical models treating separately the groundwater flow problem and the consolidation process, and with constant hydrogeological and geomechanical parameters, give also a very rough estimation of the reality. In these models, as a matter of fact, the strong variations of the permeability, the storage and the compressibility values are neglected during the consolidation. Variation laws for the parameters and the flow-consolidation coupling are exposed. It is obvious that the introduction of these laws and coupling in the constitutive laws of the subsidence models, constitutes a large step in the direction of more reliability and accuracy.
