The Ophrys of the Gers, Ophrys aegirtica, an unrecognized species of the French flora | L'Ophrys du Gers, Ophrys aegirtica, une espece meconnue de la flore francaise
1996
Delforge, P.
Research in the South-West of France, departments of Gers (32) and Hautes-Pyrenees (65) in June 1981, 1995, and 1996 has revealed 20 sites of an Ophrys usually determined as Ophrys fuciflora but distinguished by a later flowering period as well as floral dimensions and structural characteristics. Not yet published information gives also 10, and perhaps 11 sites in the border department of Haute-Garonne (31). O. fuciflora seems to be lacking in that area. Pseudocopulations by a specific pollinator, the solitary bee Eucera hispana, have been observed. All this facts prove the specific status of this taxon. A differential diagnose is made. Nomenclatural solutions are envisaged but Ophrys truncata Dulac is a nomen illegitimum and Ophrys x vicina Duffort is not suitable to name that taxon. Consequently, it is described here as Ophrys aegirtica sp. nova. Uncertainties of the systematics of Eucera hispana are mentioned. A new interpretation of the parents of two interspecific hybrids described by Duffort is made. A list and a map of the 30 or 31 actually known localities of Ophrys aegirtica are given
