Gene technology and its application in agriculture
1998
Keller, B. (Universitaet Zuerich, Zuerich (Switzerland). Insitut fuer Pflanzenbiologie)
Transgenic plants were grown on an area of more than 120'000 km2 in 1997, maily in North America. This development has consequences for plant breeding: if there is a long-term need for non-transgenic varieties (e.g. for organic agriculture), GMO-free breeding programs should now be initiated. The role of Swiss plant biotechnology as well as possible problems related to the large scale growth of transgenic varieties are discussed.
