Rice calli from mature embryos were dried with filter papers or silica gel. The results indicated that desiccation could significantly increase the regeneration frequency of the callus. The optical condition for plant regeneration was desiccation for 4 days with the filter paper treatment when more than 50 percent water in the callus was lost. Desiccation could also promote the absorption of mineral elements by the callus, affect the expression of the peroxidase isozyme and reduce the proline content
