Relationships between body measurements and milk performance of Estonian Black-and White cows

Relationships between the body measurements and productivity traits were investigated. The measurements were taken as well as the body weight and score of 1104 Estonian Black-and-White cows were determined during their 1., 2. and 3. lactation in 1993-1995. Body score was evaluated by the 3 point system: thin-1p., average- 2p., fat- 3p. The following measurements were taken: withers height, rump height, body diagonal by stick, chest depth, heart girth, carpal girth and width between pin bones. On the basis of the analyses one can conclude: The cows with taller wither have wide rump, greater heart girth, longer, deeper and heavier body than the smaller ones. The heavier cows have greater heart girth and deeper chest than lighter cows. Taller and heavier cows with deeper chest have higher milk, fat and protein production. The heavier cows with lower wither height and wide body have higher fat content in milk. The cows with wide rump and greater carpal girth have a higher content of milk protein. At selecting it is necessary to prefer taller, heavier cows with deeper chest and wide rump, because they have higher milk performance
