The level of barley and oats breeding at Jogeva

A number of barley and oat varieties were tested in 1993-1996 at the Jogeva Plant Breeding Institute to compare the newest Estonian varieties with those of Sweden and other countries. The results of trials showed: (1) the grain yield and its malt quality of the Estonian malting barley variety 'Elo' were at the same level with the best European malting barley varieties 'Alexis' and 'Goldie'; (2) the grain yield and lodging resistance of the Estonian feed barley variety 'Anni' were at the same level comparing with the same type of European varieties, (3) the Estonian food oats variety 'Jaak' showed a better grain yield capacity and grain quality compared with the Swedish variety 'Salo'
