An effect of ecological and conventional cultivation methods on the yield and biological quality of vegetables
1997
Jaervan, M. | Niine, H. | Rausberg, P.
In microplot trials an effect of plant compost on potato, Swedish turnip, red beet, carrot and cabbage was compared with that of mineral fertilizers. The comparison was based on the equivalent amounts of plant nutrients. In the conditions of 1996, the yields were higher with mineral fertilizers than with compost: in the case of root crops 15-22 per cent, the case of potato 34 per cent and with cabbage 40-60 per cent. As a rule, the application of fertilizers reduced the content in carrot. There were no major differences in the effect of compost and mineral fertilizers on the biological quality of vegetables. However, compared to compost the application of mineral fertlizers resulted in a considerably higher nitrate content in Swedish turnip and early cabbage, and in a higher carotene content in carrot. The taste of turnip was the best on the control variant, that of carrot in the variant with compost/
