Several substances and their residues in meat and milk were analysed according to the Council Directive 96/23/EC in Estonia. Altogether 329 samples were taken by the official veterinarians from all 15 counties. The content of residues of macrolides, fluoroquinolons, heavy metals were far below maximum residue limits (MRL). Only 6 liver samples revealed ELISA results slightly exceeding MRLs for nortestosterone and 1 urine sample analysed for beta-agonists. These samples will be analysed by HPLC additionally. The content of nortestosterone in one urine sample of a porker exceeded MRL 19 times. Apparently it was a cryptorchide since all the other samples from the same farm did not exeed the MRL. It can be concluded that the level of residues in food producing animals in Estonia is quite comparable with that in Nordic countries. The only exeption may by chloramphenicol which is still used in veterinary practice in farm animals although in this investigation project it was not detected
