Miller, I. | Jaervis, T. | Lauter, J. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia))
In 1994-1995 trichinellosis in domestic pigs was diagnosed for the first time in Estonia. Trichinella infection was found in 5 pigs from two separate pig farms on the island of Hiiumaa. There were no clinical symptoms in 3 pigs. 2 pigs had clinical symptoms: one of them began to limp, but in the other emaciation progressed quickly and paralysis of the posterior part of the body developed. In order to study muscle samples by the compressor method, Trichinella capsules with the first symptoms of calcification in the muscle tissue of one pig and completely calcified capsules in the muscle tissue of the other pig were found. Sarcocysts were also found in the muscle tissue. In the muscle tissue of one pig the invasionintensity of sarcocysts was low, but in the muscle tissue of the other pig it was high. Trichinella species were identified in the Trichinella Reference Centre in Rome by the RAPD method. Domestic pig was infected by Trichinella britovi. Wild animals were infected by T. britovi on the island of Hiiumaa too
