Studies on dynamic changes in growth, nutrient contents and grain yield of maize plants under weed-competitive stress conditions
1997
Hussein, H.F. (National Research Centre, Cairo (Egypt). Botany Dept.)
The vegetative growth of maize plant as expressed by plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area per plant dry weight of leaves, stem and whole plant, leaf area index (LAI), specific leaf weight (SLW), net assimilation rate (NAR), crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR) and relative nitrogen assimilation rate (RNAR) were significantly decreased by weed competition. While, the presence of weeds has no significant effect on specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf area ratio (LAR). The result indicated that the decrement in nutrients content in grains per plant were often in nearly a linear fashion with decreasing the dry matter of grains and were proportional with the duration of weed-interference
